Final Evaluation

 Final Evaluation

For our project fragmented time, I have always had the theme of fashion in my head. I started out with the idea similar to John Stezaker’s work of cutting out and physically layering images however my ideas soon developed in to more digital destruction. For my first contact sheet I didn’t have much of an idea where to start, I knew I wanted a range of images but wasn’t sure what of yet so used my sister as a model and took some standard images. I didn’t really experiment with angles, lighting or clothing yet but I feel it was successful and started me off well and I used an image from that shoot in my final 10. For my second shoot I feel that I was starting to get an idea but it still wasn’t clear enough. I then got to editing and found what I wanted my final images to look like. By the third shoot I was clear and by the fourth I was filling in the gaps I had left.

John Stezaker inspired my original idea of using a scanner and cutting out and drawing and repeating the process many times however after doing it I realised I wasn’t sure I liked the end result. I use one of the images for my alternative surface prints and am glad I didn’t go through with it. I feel I went over board with it and it didn’t turn out as well as I hoped. I then developed my ideas in to digitally editing after doing some research on other photographers.

Overall I feel my images don’t necessarily match but when I put them in the layout of a magazine I liked how it turned out. Each page had a different colour theme and all match the fragmented time theme. I wanted to keep the same editing throughout however realised it was getting too much so decided to only have a few with the wave editing on it. I edited all the colours and either added saturation or changed the colour all together. My favourite image of the 11 i ended up with is the one with the legs that I ended green and purple. It was one of the first edits I did and still by the end is my best one. I feel it fits fragmented time the most as there is multiple legs and it’s been warped with the wave editing.

Once I had figured out what I wanted my images to look like, it was easier and less time consuming when editing. I had some struggle with choosing which images to use from my four shoots however after careful consideration with matching images up I found 11 I liked. I enjoyed putting them in to the Magazine Layout as it brought my idea from my head on to a page and made it a solid plan. Without the layout, none of the image match and even deter from the theme, but when combined with one another I feel they work well and was a successful outcome.

If I had the chance to make improvements, I would do a few more shoots and experiment more with composition and instead of relying on editing, I would shoot things with more colour. I would also experiment with long exposures to get the warped effect without doing it in photoshop. Although I am happy with the images I came out with, I feel I could of spent more time on the actual decision making form the start. I would also spend more time on the researching to see if any more ideas came out of it instead of using the same editing technique for all my images.

With my alternative surfaces, I wanted to print on more diverse surfaces like fabrics such as silks, Lycra’s and Denims but unfortunately I couldn’t find an affordable place that would do it. I feel my project would be brought together more tightly if I had used denim or another fabrics because my theme was fashion however the coloured paper worked just as well.

Overall, I am pleased with the majority of my project, the only thing letting me down was not having enough variety with the alternative surfaces. The magazine layout brought my work together better than having them on their own and I feel I successfully fit the theme of Fashion in Fragmented time.
